Types of Prosthesis

Nowadays there are two kinds of prosthesis that are fundamentally used:

The ones that are filled with saline solution and
The ones that have silicone cohesive gel.

They are both madde of a silicone or micropoliruetane coverage, while in the inside, one has exclusively saline and the other is composed of silicone cohesive gel especially designed to avoid its expansion in case of breaking and for it to remain in the inside and not disperse in the tissues of the patient avoiding contaminations.

On the other side, the prosthesis of saline have the particularity that it is introduced empty inthe women's body, once inside, the are filled through special canules. For this reason, its volume is smaller when they are implanted, and the incision that the surgeon performs is also smaller.

In the case of prosthesis made of silicone cohesive gel this does not occur, due that they come filled from the fabric, and therefore the surgeon will have to perform an incition that allows the manipulation in thei nterior of the breast with the objective to place the prosthesis in the right place and in the right position. The size of this incision depennds on the size of the implant, the elasticity of the patient's skin and in the hability of the surgeon.

When we talk about shapes of the prosthesis, they can be round or anatomic. Today the anatomic are most commonly used, because they adjust perfectly to the natural anatomy of the breast due to the "drop" shape that it has (with more volume on the lower part that on the upper). The objective is to obtain the most natural aspect for the breast.

Parallel, the implants can be rough or smooth according to its texture: this last were created because it rough texture , similar to an accordion, avoids a capsule to be formed - because a coverage is naturally produced when the pressure is made by the body - and the prosthesis contracts, and there is a margin to avoid the contraction, that is most common in the smooth prosthesis.

Between these two groups there are some kinds of comercial brands that are put into disposition to the surgeon, there is an important variety of sizes and shapes enough to cover the needs. The plastic surgeon will know this diversity of options, and will choose the right one to obtain the perfect result according to each woman.
